We had a memorable Family Home Evening the other night and I wanted to share it. I taught the kids about the Anti-Nephi-Lehi's (Alma 24) and how they promised to never shed blood again after they joined Christ's church and were completely changed. So they buried their swords and even changed their name and covenanted with Heavenly Father that they would not fight ever again. Then we talked about if we ever have wars in our house and that although we don't have physical wars we often have situations that keep us from having true peace. We decorated our own swords and wrote some actions on them that we all struggle with that bring contention into our home (even Mom and Dad). We went out back and Daddy dug a hole so we could bury the swords- and hopefully our behaviors that keep peace away.
We of course still have problems with some of these things, but pretty much every time- the girls remember this lesson and mostly Em says, "We buried that sword- remember?" So at least they remember that we are trying to make our home a more peaceful, loving place to live.
